Color Palettes for the Ruler Brand Archetype

Historically, royalty and power have been associated with colors such as gold, purple, black, and silver.

Using this as a starting point we can build out color palettes for the Ruler that convey the following different characteristics and traits of this powerful brand archetype: responsible and sophisticated, dominant and a leader, and polished and successful.

Responsible & Sophisticated:

Because the Ruler takes on the task of creating order out of chaos, they are very responsible and sophisticated individuals and brands. In colors, this translates to deep shades of mature hues that appear assured and trustworthy.

A deep blue/green, a maroon, and a mustard are cohesive yet contrasting. They add some color without being too bright or youthful. Army green and a dusty blue are added for balance, and a crisp white rounds out this sophisticated and complete first palette.

Dominant & Leader

The Ruler has a natural instinct to dominate situations and have people follow them. They need to be bold in making decisions but remain likable so their followers don’t go elsewhere.

This palette uses shades of purple to convey the feeling of power in an approachable way. A peach contrasts purple as complementary colors with a punch. And warm white and plus a bright, crisp white completes this second palette suited for this stable and secure brand archetype while still being bold and demanding of attention.

Polished & Successful

Our last palette is a bit more modern and bright but is a very fitting choice for the Ruler nonetheless. It focuses on using bold purples to exude success and wealth. These purples combined with two greens, one lime and one olive, creates contrast with a surprising addition for visual appeal. Lastly, a sandy white and crisp white are used as neutrals for this last palette.

Polished and pristine, the dark colors appear finished and stable– a great choice for the Ruler brand archetype.

Color is one of the most important ways that power can be conveyed to an audience. Pay close attention to how you are showing your audience that you can be in control, but don’t let the idea of powerful colors limit you to being dark! Find ways to combine shades of purples, metallic silvers and golds, and deep grays and blacks to perfectly represent who you can be for your clients.
